Leah Wong was born in Qingdao (Tsingtao), China. She received her BFA in oil painting from the China Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou and then went on to teach painting at the Shanghai Theater Academy. In 1993, she came to the United States, where she earned an MFA in painting from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.

Leah’s work reflects the influences of the history of art, traditional Chinese paper- cuts and traditional Chinese paintings. She investigates things that can extend her imagination and can be part of the language of painting. Anything she reads, thinks about or encounters can become potential sources for ideas. She frees her imagination and draws animal-like images that emerge from observing clouds, stains or liquid splashes. These imaginative creatures bring diverse personalities into her paintings. Her goal is to have an open-ended conceptual narration, fusing personal expression with shared social and cultural spaces that leave room for viewers to bring their own experiences and imaginations to the images.
